Neighbourhood social apps: the return of the 'small village' on your phone

After the giant networks, the hype shifts back to the micro-local: apps centred on your neighbourhood and neighbours, an ideal playground for a country the size of a handkerchief.

We've been all the way round the global networks where you follow strangers on the other side of the planet, and the new wave goes the other way: hyperlocal social apps centred on the people who literally live two streets away.

Why micro-local is making a comeback

Endless-feed fatigue, a craving for the concrete, a need for trustworthy recommendations: micro-local answers all of it. You swap a good restaurant tip, a favour, or a 'whose cat is this?' alert that's more useful than a million anonymous likes.

Luxembourg, a goldmine setting

Here, micro-local is almost a no-brainer: a compact, multilingual country where your neighbour might speak three languages and a great bakery tip crosses a neighbourhood in one morning. The caveat to keep in mind: small village = everyone recognizes everyone, so skip the gossip mode and keep the tone kind. Use it with a smile, not a pointing finger.
