The "-core" phenomenon: nostalgia turned into an aesthetic

Cottagecore, cybercore, and a thousand others: why the web now files our moods and memories into moodboards labelled "-core".

At some point, everything became a "-core". A cosy cabin vibe? A -core. A nostalgia for early-2000s screens? Another -core. The web invented a way of cataloguing our emotions and memories as named, shareable, instantly recognisable aesthetics. It has become a visual language in its own right, and Luxembourg, with its rolling countryside and its ultra-modern districts, happens to offer plenty to feed several of these worlds. Let's unpack this obsession with aesthetic filing.

Putting a name on a vibe

The genius of the "-core" suffix is that it turns a fuzzy feeling into a shareable category. Before, you liked "old computers and retro sounds" without quite being able to explain it. Now there's a word, a label, a whole community that feels the same way. Naming an aesthetic gives it a social existence. And once named, it can spread, be collected, be worn.

This mechanism answers a very human need: to locate oneself. In an endless stream of images, picking an aesthetic is like planting a flag, saying "this is who I am, or at least my mood right now". The -core becomes a modular identity card, swapped according to the season or the whim, with no permanent commitment.

Nostalgia as raw material

Many of these aesthetics dig into the past: textures of old photographs, interfaces of yesteryear, outdated objects suddenly rehabilitated. Nostalgia has become a powerful creative fuel, because it blends comfort with distinction. You warm yourself on the memory of an era, real or imagined, while displaying a taste that stands out. Retro is no longer outdated, it's curated.

The downside is inflation: by turning everything into a -core, some of these labels end up drained of meaning, manufactured from scratch for a cycle of a few weeks. But the underlying momentum stays fascinating. We live in an age where we no longer simply feel a mood: we name it, document it, share it. The vibe has become a cultural object, and the -core is its great open catalogue.
